Preparation to create a tufted piece
An accelerated view of tufting and carving a rug
Making a custom rug
Yarn: The process starts with the selection of yarn colours and material, which can be made from acrylic or wool. Then each yarn ball is re-rolled with a yarn winder.
Backing fabric: The primary backing material is prepared, monk's cloth is the preferred tufting fabric.
The monk's cloth is stretched over a tufting frame, creating a tight surface for the tufting process. The tighter, the better.
The tufting machine is selected according to the type of rug that is about to be made, it can be a loop pile gun, a cut pile gun or a extra long pile gun. The gun is cleaned and oiled before use.
The tufting gun is equipped with a tufting needle and the yarn is fed through the eye of the needle. The needle pierces the primary backing, pushing the yarn through to the other side.
As the needle penetrates the backing, it forms loops or tufts of yarn on the opposite side, creating the pile or surface texture of the rug
After tufting, the rug goes through additional processes to secure the tufts and enhance durability. Latex glue is applied to the back to lock the yarn in place.
The borders of the rug are also folded in the back and glued to ensure a quality finish.
A secondary backing made of black felt is added for additional stability and reinforcement.
The rug is then sheared to create an even and uniform surface. Then finally the rug is carved for a more professional and clean look.
The final step involves inspection, trimming, covering the rug of two layers of a stain and water repellent spray, and finishing touches to ensure the rug meets quality standards
